Alterations to form new Kitchen and Dining Area

2022

This impressive Grade II* Listed Building located in Long Street, Devizes had a very modest kitchen which did not reflect the status of the property.

Client’s Brief was to convert the existing single storey rear off-shoot into a Kitchen with a Dining Area and Entrance Lobby.  An application was submitted to Wiltshire Council for Pre-Application advice, the feedback from which provided one of the key drivers for the full design.  Although the original house is old and has significant historical interest, there was potential to take a more contemporary approach to design in this part of the building.  The design also presented a number of structural challenges as the roof structure was rather slender and the external walls had been added to and altered over the years.  It was decided to introduce metal portal frames to the inside of the building which, not only strengthened the structure, but allowed the low horizontal ceiling to be removed, radically changing the space internally.

It was intended for the portal frames to be on view so allowing the new structural elements to be expressed.  A large, glazed screen / door was provided giving that desirable flow between inside and outside, however, rather than providing Bi-fold doors, large sliding doors were introduced which were set out in conjunction with the portal frames.  A large picture window was also provided offering views to the walled garden beyond.

Aside from design, Dolman also addressed the Building Regulation and Tendering matters with a reduced Contract Administration role to suit our Client.  Client dealt with internal design matters relating to the Kitchen cabinets, decoration and floor finishes.

Client, Contractor and Dolman are very pleased with the end result and the new Kitchen and Dining Area provides that WOW factor to match this attractive building and home.
