Classroom Extension

2022

Heddington CE Aided Primary School is a small school with the original Victorian School Room extended at various times during the 20th and early 21st Centuries.  The School consists of a modern key-stage 1 classroom and a key-stage 2 classroom located in the Victorian part of the building.  This classroom had a folding acoustic partition to provide separation as required between year groups at various times of the School day.

This arrangement of the key-stage 2 children was not ideal and a rising Number-on-Role lead to pressures on teaching space and it was determined that a new classroom should be provided.  Funding for the project was from various sources and with this in place, we began to work closely with the School to agree a Concept Proposal.  With this agreed, Planning Permission was sought and granted by the Local Authority for a Single Storey Classroom Extension incorporating internal bin and PTA Stores.  The extension was carefully positioned to link with existing internal circulation space, minimise the amount of work required to the existing building, whilst appearing subservient to the original building.  This was achieved by reducing the ridge height of the extension and introducing a catslide roof on the playground side.

Building Regulation Approval was obtained and permission received from Wessex Water to make a connection to their sewer.  Tender documents were then prepared, including Technical Drawings, Specification of Works and Pre-Construction Information (Health & Safety).  Following the tender process, a Contractor was appointed and Contract Administration carried out including Pre-Commencement / Progress Meetings, regular Site Visits, Cost Control and Health & Safety Matters.

The project was completed slightly ahead of time and within budget.  The School took occupation December 2022.
